Heat Advisory Tips
When a heat wave comes, the high temperatures can be a dangerous risk for those how do not know the signs. Here is a summary of the terms used by the National Weather Service during such periods:
- Heat Watch – Excessive heat is possible in the next day or two.
- Heat Advisory – High and potentially dangerous values of heat index are occurring, imminent, or highly likely. Prolonged exposure to heat and/or strenuous activity may result in heat-related illness.
- Heat Warning – Life threatening heat is occurring, imminent or highly likely.
Heat Advisory Reminders
Some reminders for a heat advisory situation:
- Check NOAA Weather Radio for the latest forecast when planning outdoor activity.
- Have a place to cool off. If you don’t have air conditioning, find out if your community has cooling centers or plan to stay with friends or family who have AC.
- Plan the day’s activity in a cool place such as a shopping mall, library or with a family member or neighbor.
- Check on elderly or ill family members, friends and neighbors.
- Learn the symptoms of potential heat disorders and the proper first aid in the event of an emergency.
Common Sense Practices for Heat Advisories
It might be common sense, but as a reminder.
- If possible, spend some time in air conditioning, even if just a couple hours to cool off. This can significantly reduce the risk of heat-related illness.
- If you do not have AC, stay on the lowest floor and out of the sun.
- Note: electric fans do not cool the air, but they do help sweat evaporate, which will cool your body.
- Drink plenty of water and natural juices, even if you don’t feel thirsty you must keep hydrated.
- Avoid strenuous activity and chill out. If you do have to perform strenuous activity, do so during the coolest part of the day, if possible.
- Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, and light-colored clothing.
- Avoid going out in the sun and blazing heat for long periods, if possible.
- If you must be out in the heat and sun, use sunscreen and wear a wide-brimmed hat.
- Keep the shades or blinds closed in your home, but windows open slightly (if no AC).
- Keep your lights dimmed low or turned off.
- Take cool showers or baths or use cool wet towels throughout the day.
- Eat small meals and eat more frequently.
- Avoid using the oven if possible, as it will increase the temperature in your home.
- Avoid alcoholic beverages and drinks with caffeine such as coffee, tea and pop, which dehydrates the body.
- Do not leave children or pets in a closed vehicle.
- Ensure that outdoor pets have plenty of shade and water to drink.
